Tutor Spotlight: Ray Gong

Hello! My name is Ray Gong, and I proudly serve as an English tutor at Potencia. I'm a rising senior majoring in Biology on the pre-health track at Brandeis University. Although my academic life keeps me pretty engaged, I've always believed in balancing hard work with a healthy dose of physical exercise and community service.

My journey with Potencia began when my Biology advisor mentioned that the organization was looking for volunteers. Being a 1.5-generation immigrant myself, the mission of Potencia struck a deep chord within me. I remember vividly the challenges I faced learning English and cultivating the courage to interact confidently. I was inspired to use my experiences and acquired knowledge to ease the transition for others navigating the same path.

So, I took the plunge and became a Potencia tutor, eager to make a difference. This experience has been nothing short of transformative. With every tutoring session, I've been able to form bonds with my learners and gain a profound understanding of their unique struggles. This has allowed me to tailor my approach, helping them in areas they find most challenging and equipping them with tools for smoother integration.

Potencia has not just been an avenue for me to give back but also a platform for growth. It's challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, enhanced my communication skills, and deepened my understanding of the multicultural fabric that makes up America. More importantly, it has instilled in me a greater sense of empathy and an appreciation for the strength of the human spirit.

If you're considering joining Potencia or have any questions, I'd be more than happy to share more about my experience! Feel free to reach out to me at ruigong@brandeis.edu. Let's work together to create a welcoming environment for all!
